We read The Giver during the first quarter of my Language Arts class this year. The main character, Jonas, lives in a community with complete sameness; no color, feelings, or memories. In my eyes sameness is a bad idea, however there are a few advantages and disadvantages in using sameness in Jonas’ community. An advantage of sameness is that there is no discrimmination. For example, their is no such idea as racism because every individual in the community has the same colorless skin color. Another advantage in sameness is that almost everybody in the community was happy. If you can’t discriminate other people, then they don’t really no what their good or bad at, or what they look like, therefore everyone is happy. A disadvantage of sameness is that nobody can really have a true personality. For example, if nobody has any feelings or if everybody in the community has the same hair color, than it’s almost impossible to develop a personality. However in the book The Giver, Lois Lowry likes the idea of sameness, which makes no discrimination, and also no true personalities.
